Artist's Biography

Ashley Meredith is a photo-anthropologist from Georgia. Her photography attempts to capture the essence of seeing social phenomenon on signs, in public, and community events, through traveling and living abroad. She currently studies anthropology in the master's program at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, with an emphasis in visual communication and socio-cultural anthropology.

As a child, she had a fascination with language---spelling, sounds, and how everyone communicates in the world. Through her education in Spanish language and literature, followed by education in linguistics, she came to realize that language was just one big standardization. As she studied standardized Spanish, French, Italian, Latin, Hawaiian, and Estonian she developed an appreciation for language change and coinage, but also developed an interest in creative ways to use language. Throughout her site, intentional mixtures of languages, spellings, and even capitalizations can be found.
