Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is a country I longed to see. It felt so mysterious and romantic in its harsh winters and Bohemian rooftops.

My first stop was Plzen. I found myself in the Czech Republic with two close friends who are also air rifle shooters for their nation, United States and Germany. Plzen is a very Czech city--old church in the city center, cobblestone streets, damp, dark, and the street lighting makes the city feel so Bohemian. The Czech food is delicious--all of the Czech staples--dumplings and goulash!

It was 1 day until the competition so the boys insisted I entertain myself. Speaking no Czech, other than the few words I learned in trying to find bus tickets, I made it onto a bus to Prague (Praha to the Czechs). Very little English seemed to be spoken there as well as very little on the maps, but that was the romance I had cooked up about this beautiful country! It was a challenge just to get on the bus for a ride one hour to the city.

I arrived at the bus terminal which is also the site of the subway. I recognized a few of the names and hopped on the next train to what I thought was the center. It was the center, but in front of a large building. Walking around the city, the center was right behind me. I was not worried since I was so enthralled with being in Praha, I could not believe I had actually made it! I found the Charles Bridge and the towers at each end. Climbing to the top, I saw all of my fantasies come true---the Bohemian rooftops. It was truly a romantic place, one of which I purchased a piece of art that reminded me of my Sweetheart. If purchasing art is on the agenda, bargaining may occur on a calculator to be sure of the negotiated price.

Every building in Praha and Plzen are worthy of a glance, a stop, and a perusal! Be sure to learn a few words and with a Czech or two. It is truly a romantic city filled with friendly Czechs and delicious food!
